Not onlv will the best j)art of Mr. Vj. Gilbert’s remarkable collection l)e shown, but also some new varieties in the collection of Henry (’. Millei', Ks<|i-., of this citv. All of the known varieties in these collections will be shown, and the union of the two collections will j)resent, both for condition and variety, the greatest colhadion known.
As no similar work has ever been attempted, this pamphlet will be invaluable for future classilication of the cents of this date, ’fhe fillet varieties will be given numbers, and the “caj>” varieties will be given letters, so that new numbers and new let- ters mav be added with the discoverv of anv dies new to these fine collections. Especially ap})reciative of this work should be the collectors of the cents of 1794, which are covered in a some- what similar work by W. W. Hays.

Between the 6 and bust is a raised point like a period, and between bust and chin, near the neck, are two more. Key. The left branch of the wreath has 14 leaves, and the right branch 18 leaves, and each have 7 berries; the legend is very near the milling, the letters of which are nearly nniformly spaced and fairly distant from the wrth. This reverse is a close copy of the reverse of the 1794 cents, having the high ribbon bows, knot and jiendant ends, and the fraction near the milling. It is the only variety of the 179(i cents to have two berries immediately at the left of
s the bows. Believed to be the rarest variety of the 1796
cents. This specimen is a gem jet black and about nncirc- nlated, but has been skilfully plugged at to]) of head; Mr. Gilbert paid $20 for this ])iece. Excessivery rare.

Obv. “Liberty” very close to both ribbon and head, the letters “E” and “K” nearly touch the hair; in the date the figure 1 touches the hair, and the to]) of the 6 is merged with the bust; there is a crack in the die, extend- ing from the milling near the 9 of date, to the left, touch- ing the bottoms of both 7 and 1, and then the lower curl, and continning on to the milling. Rev. There are 16 leaves on the left branch of the wreath, and 19 on the right branch, and 6 berries on each; the lowest leaf on the inside of the left branch touches of “Cent”, and the lowest on the inside of the right branch touches the “T” of the word. A ])ecnliarity of this coin is a single berry on the outside of the right branch, under the letter “C” of “America”; figures of fraction distant from short dividing line. A very rare variety.
